Addressing Climate Change
Protection from the Impacts of Climate
- To protect Maryland’s people, infrastructure, and investments from the impacts of climate change, we are taking action now to ensure that our coastal communities are ready, adaptive and resilant.
- Maryland’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) requires inspection of vehicle emission systems every two years to help reduce vehicle emissions that contribute to Maryland’s air quality problem of ground-level ozone.
- The Maryland Commission on Climate Change report includes 42 actions to help the state greatly reduce its carbon footprint while creating jobs and reducing energy costs to consumers.
- Maryland offers free assistance to manufacturers to lower operating costs and increase the competitive edge by preventing pollution and implementing environmental management systems (EMSs) based on the ISO 14001 global standard.
Preserving Maryland's Landscape
- Through the cutting edge GIS technology of GreenPrint, every Marylander can now track land conservation progress across the state and identify ecologically significant lands within their own communities.
- The Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation permanently preserves farm land through purchase of development rights to protect the environment and local food supply, strengthen rural communities and help direct development into areas with existing built infrastructure.
Conserving Energy Resources
- The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low income households reduce their fuel costs through the installation of energy-efficient measures in their homes.
- The expansion of biofuels can become a new market for agricultural and resource-based products.
